It's been almost two years since the finale of The Mandalorian, Season 2 aired and the show is set to return in 2023. The last that we'd heard was that it's slated for a February 2023 release. However, that seems to be far from a lock, as the official Twitter account of the show has removed February from its bio. Regardless, the show is a lock for 2023.
Which leaves us with a few more months to speculate on what's to unfold in the highly anticipated third season of the show. Season 2 left Bo Katan Kryze empty handed, after Din Djarin rightfully won the darksaber by defeating Moff Gideon in a duel. How Gideon obtained it remains a mystery. One thing we can ascertain is that the events following Star Wars Rebels, Season 4 left Mandalore in complete ruins, and at some point during this time period, Bo Katan lost the darksaber as well as her planet.
With Din Djarin in possession of the darksaber, an outsider who seemingly has no interest in ruling, a duel seems imminent. Djarin offered her the darksaber at the end of season 2, and she refused to take it, confirming the idea that she doesn't want it handed to her this time. She wants to earn it. Perhaps that will be the easier part, compared to the lofty task of winning the trust of her people, who have been divided and bickering amongst themselves for decades.
Is Bo Katan the one who will unite all her people and restore Mandalore to its former greatness? That is the bigger question. For anyone that's watched Rebels, Bo Katan may have seemed quite a different person then compared to The Mandalorian. She didn't seem pleased when Din Djarin walked in with the darksaber. Her expressions when Gideon talked about its significance were also confusing. Is Bo Katan ready to go to any lengths to get the darksaber back and rule because she's ready to lead it nobly and justly, or because the lust for power has twisted her to some degree. The Mandalorian season 3 trailer adds some fuel to this theory, as she's giving off some negative vibes. At least I think so.
The rest remains to be seen. One can easily make a case for Din Djarin becoming the Mandalor as he has consistently displayed over two seasons the ability to bring people together, negotiate and compromise. He also doesn't have a desire to rule, which can sometimes lead one to becoming a great ruler. History is full of examples of reluctant leaders.
Whether Bo Katan will win back the darksaber and rule Mandalore successfully, or will Din Djarin be able to keep it in his possession and grow into the leader Mandalore needs remains to be seen. What do you think lies ahead for Bo Katan and Din Djarin in The Mandalorian Season 3?
